Project #9:

Collingswood Grand Ballroom dance floor refinishing

If you're a Collingswood, New Jersey local, you'll no doubt be familiar with the Scottish Rite Auditorium. It has quite a remarkable history and was built by and is still used by the Freemasons. The part of the Scottish Rite building we worked in was the Collingswood Grand Ballroom.

It's a popular venue for weddings, celebrations, and corporate events. This sanding and refinishing project is on the center dance floor in the Grand Ballroom. With all those weddings and celebrations, this dance floor gets a lot of use and needs refreshing from time to time. This was one of those times, and we were called in to do our magic.

Project details...

The floor is constructed from Brazilian Cherry and has custom Peruvian Walnut inlays and borders. The old finish was dull and worn, and the wood was slightly cupped, most likely from excessive water as it was mopped clean.

The photos below show the condition of the dance floor. Well and truly ready to be sanded and refinished…

...and the dull scratched finish

This New Jersey hardwood floor refinishing project was unique because it had carpet surrounding it. So, we had to be super careful to keep them clean. That meant rolling out protective covers for the sanding equipment to be rolled on.

Dust containment was also super important. With the intricate sweeping staircase, curtains, custom carpets, and furniture in the ballroom, cleaning up any dust from the floor sanding would be a huge issue. So, we ensured our dustless sanding system was set up and working well…

Once completed, we taped the edges of the dance floor with painter's tape to protect the carpet, vacuumed, and began coating the dance floor…

StreetShoe by Basic Coatings was the finish used, part of our Gold Finishing System. This commercial grade system is a high-quality, two-component, water-based wood floor finish. Seeing this floor would be danced on a lot, it needed one of the toughest and most durable finishes available. Two top coats of that and two coats of commercial-grade catalyzed sealer would provide a super protective coating.

Here are some close-ups of us applying it over the Brazilian Cherry and Walnut floor…

We love working on unique flooring projects like this. And it's always nice working in our hometown. We hope many people will enjoy their weddings and special celebrations, dancing the night away on this unique Collingswood NJ hardwood floor.

HAPPY CLIENT feedback

Dustless truly is dustless. There was absolutely no mess to clean up after they completed their work. We had used Dustless Hardwood Floors several years ago and recently wanted to do another room on the same floor. They matched the stain and finish perfectly with what had previously been done. If you are getting hardwood floor refinished, I would definitely recommend using them. Dan Read | 5 Star Review on Google
